Presidential Screening committee

The committee met today at 2:00 to see the ranked candidates with complete applications who will be sent to the BOT. The top candidates are: Cantor, Cummiskey, Fettrow, Hafner, Holdnak, Kibler, Martin, Meadows, Nevious, and Spraggs.

One community member strongly urged the group to make the recommendation of using an outside search firm. She stated that too many of the applicants had inadequate experiences for the job. After much discussion, 14 on the committee voted to present this recommendation to the board as well as the list of names.

College members made many comments and shared information about several applicants. These comments were well received as well as surprising to other committee members.

The Board of Trustees meets on Monday, Dec. 3, at 5:00 to receive the list as well as the recommendation from Mr. Conner.

EVERY faculty member should be at the 5:00 Board meeting. This group will decide very quickly to go ahead with this inadequate list OR hire a search firm. This group of applicants are totally inadequate OR are not the person PJC needs. There are people the Board listens to who hope to see a very short list presented as qualified applicants. Your voice needs to be heard.

Absolutely every faculty member should be in the room to show a presence of concern on this important next step. As one of the search committee members put it at today's meeting, PJC doesn't just want folks without a job applying for this position -- PJC deserves to have a professional search firm to actively seek out a person doing the innovative, effective job of a future PJC president & and bring them into the pool of candidates.

Everyone come to Monday's meeting and bring another faculty member, this decision will be critical to us all.

Does anyone know where to find the email addresses of the BOT members?

How is June Linke "not qualified"? Who made this decision?
A long-term PJC Provost was recruited by a search firm in another state and offered the job as college president, but turned it down. From all appearances of this process, this person would not be "qualified" to be president at PJC. Yet he knows more about the college than any person currently employed. Does this make any sense?
The same will happen with Dr. Linke. Someone at PJC does not want her to be qualified, but she would certainly be qualified to be a president elsewhere.
WHO is leading this search?

Anonymous said...

The example you gave concerns a provost being offered a presidency, not a department head. Dr. Linke is not a provost, so this is a faulty comparison. Department heads are entry-level administrative positions at PJC. DHs manage one department; provosts manage entire campuses and multiple departments. You'll notice Dr. Cantor, a provost, made the list. While Dr. Linke may be excellent presidential material, the committee decided that the next president should have significant upper administrative experience. If you disagree with this, that's all the more reason to attend the board meeting and make your opinion heard.

Anonymous said...

"Hey, this guy looks good on paper. What do you mean he's not a good candidate?"

Anybody can look good on paper and not be good in person.

I know that June Linke is a more palatable and practical candidate than Dr. Martin or Dr. Cantor. I can see where disqualifying her would make people mad.

Thank you faculty members on the search committee for getting in their to convey faculty interests. If we are alarmed and want to wait to wait, it would be extremely weird to see the BOT want to rush into things. What is the rush? We have old people that are not applicants that can fill in when Dr. Delaino retires.

It's the quality and details of the experience not the quantity. If the said provost left the college and then came back and reapplied for the same position at the college, would he get rehired? No

You are right about the last comment. Neither of the internal canidates would be considered for their present positions if they left the college and returned. Jeff Cantor has cost the college thousands of dollars by starting vocational programs (like carpentry)that are not funded by the state at the community college level. Those programs were "leveled" years ago to be funded only at vocational schools like George Stone in Escambia County and Locklin Vo-Tech in Santa Rosa County. He was told this before he started the programs but ignored the advice from very experencied people.
Jim Martin has caused more than enough concern from the current president and provosts with his explosive temper.

With all due respect to the current search committee, this process, as it stands now, is fundamentally flawed and unfair. It appears that an agenda exists to only let the committee consider certain applicant's packets over others. This strikes me as inherently biased. I know Dr. June Linke. She is an exceptional lady of intelligence and wisdom. However it appears that "someone" or some entity has seen fit to deem her unqualified. This is both insulting and laughable, as she is exceptionally qualified and I strongly encourage all Faculty and Board members to read Dr. Linke's packet, including the letters of recommendation. If this current process stands, then it is easy to understand why public entities in Escambia County have lost the trust of the general public.

Cantor is looking for things to take credit for on his resume. He ignores the wisdom and advice of others to wastefully reinvent the wheel. He has a collection of wobbley wheels.

And scarey Dr. Martin.
We are quite the magnet for special people.

Although I understand that many people who know Dr. Linke personally might find her capable and intelligent, that is not the image she projects in large public gatherings. There she appears tongue-tied and almost incoherent. Is that the image we want the president of our college to present to the world? And, her experience as a department head isn't the upper level administrative experience that a college president needs to have to be successful. If Dr. Linke wants to move into that arena, she should start by applying for senior level administrative positions (like provost, dean, VP) and garner the necessary experience.
Regardless of whether or not one likes Dr. Linke, the committee AS A WHOLE determined that there were too few well-qualified candidates that submitted applications for this position. Please don't let your personal feelings for one applicant blind you to the fact that 24 people pored over these packets without feeling comfortable with the quality of the applicants.

I hope everyone saw the editorial in the Pensacola News Journal today. If it hadn't been for some brave faculty and career service members speaking up I don't think that a national search firm would have been recommended for such an important job as presidnet of PJC.

Anonymous said...

Yes, thank you to every one. We need to keep on talking.

PJC search committee right to expand search Dec. 5, 2007 PNJ.com
There was a hint of ominous news in Tuesday's story on the search for a new president for Pensacola Junior College. But there was also a sound decision.

The committee charged with finding applicants for the PJC president's job did the correct thing in deciding to expand the search for applicants by hiring a national search firm.

PJC President Tom Delaino made a telling point: The cost of a search firm — $30,000 to $40,000 — pales in comparison to the college's $52 million annual budget, and its importance.

PJC has become an integral part of this area's economic development. It provides job training not only for new companies seeking a trained workforce, but also upward mobility annually for thousands of area residents looking to gain new job skills.

Florida's community college system has become one of the best in the nation; in terms of its mission, it might be outperforming the State University System's four-year universities.

That makes finding the best available new president of real importance to Northwest Florida. We need a vibrant, innovative, effective PJC to remain a major player in economic development.

The ominous news?

A senior vice president at PJC noted that each of the Florida community colleges that replaced their presidents over the last year reported they attracted only a small pool of applicants.

That is disturbing if it indicates that Florida's problems with hurricanes, insurance and the housing market are making top performers leery of taking jobs here.

In the past, the chance to take a well-paid position in Florida would have been seen as a no-brainer. The combination of our beaches, sunny weather and reputation — not to mention the lack of a state income tax — made jobs here very attractive.

It's worth noting that the search committee's initial list of 13 candidates included seven from Florida — two of them from PJC — and one from nearby Andalusia, Ala.

There's not a lot in terms of national diversity there.

Still, the top job at PJC is a good one. The fact is it should draw excellent candidates from around the country. Delaino's package of salary and benefits is worth almost $250,000 annually.

It will be interesting to see who a national search firm can bring to the table.

The lack of popularity for hiring an internal candidate stems from the "no change" policy adopted by our current president. If ever an institution needed change, 'twas and 'tis PJC.

Dr. James Martin is definitely an agent of change ... and good change. I wish that the academic side of the house could see and understand the positive changes he's brought to this institution within the area of his responsibility.

Anonymous said...

Lack of popularity for a recruiting firm stems from our recent tide of poor administrators which includes the two internal applicants. It's sickening.

I believe that we have all said that these applicants (with the exclusion of possibly one or two of the external applicants)and the possibility of more of the same types of applicants have made the idea of using a search firm very desired.

Long time lurker, thought I would say hello! I really dont post much but thanks for the good times I have here. Love this place..

When I was hurt in that automotive accident my life would be changed always. Unfortunately that driver had no car insurance and I was going to be in pain for ever.

This was not time for me to start and guess what to do. I had to find a good lawyer to help me get what I needed. After all, my family was counting on me.

How terrible was it? I has bedridden for 9 months, I had to have constant care and my clinic bills went through the roof!

Luckily, I found a good referral site to help me.

I will post more later this week to tell you more about what I have been going through.

If you need an accident lawyer try the guys at
