Our last two presidents were long time employees of PJC with established reputations in the community. I am sure board members felt comfortable advancing Atwell and Delaino to the position of president. It is safe to believe that how people have composed themselves in the past is indicative of how they would represent themselves in the future.
BTW I don't work in student activities.
We have the advantage of knowing Dr. Martin in person, not from interviewing games. Let me first say something positive. He is o.k. shaking hands, following a script, and wearing a clean suit. Now onto the negative and the main point, I would feel uncomfortable with what he would say in any situation if he didn't have a script to go by.
I have had the privilege of working both as an adjunct and full-time employee at PJC over a span of 14 years. I love the school and greatly appreciate the opportunity to have served the students. Which is why I feel compelled to write this.
Dr. James Martin, in my opinion and in the opinion of the majority of PJC, would be a disaster as President. Employees are afraid to send e-mails to the Board for fear of retribution from Dr. Martin. Dr. Martin seems unable to separate personal from professional, makes “knee jerk” decisions, does not appear to have any loyalty to those who work for him and does not appear to have PJC betterment and advancement at heart (as Dr. Atwell certainly did).
PJC badly needs “fresh blood,” someone who will give the college new direction and strong leadership. There is a great disparity between the way Dr. Martin treats employees and superiors.
Dr Martin is all show and no substance. He says the right thing, but does what he wants to do with no consideration for the opinions of those who work for him. He does not engage in collaboration. He takes credit for accomplishments that are not his to claim. He become involved just enough to benefit from the positive aspects of an endeavor. If he becomes president, we are in serious trouble. He refers to his office as "the magic kingdom" and this is a fitting name as he does whatever he wants to do without consideration for rules, regulations, or reality. I encourage you to speak up and speak out. He makes a good show and if those who know his true colors do not speak out, he may well be our next president.
I heard Jim Martin promise the faculty whatever we needed to do our job. I also heard him talk about his teaching experience. He says what he thinks needs to be said. So now and never any different.
The Board is looking favorably at him. We need to make our wishes known.
Dr. Martin is NOT the person that PJC needs in ANY leadership role-including the position he now holds. I do hope that this board will not be swayed by the "charm" that Martin presents - he may deserve an "Oscar" . . but he certainly does not deserve serious consideration as our "leader". I can't believe that he is even in the top four candidates . . .what is really going on here?
